Real business

Southern Parking Company started with something extremely simple: unused space. Living near Chastain Amphitheatre meant watching hundreds of concertgoers search for convenient parking while nearby driveways sat empty. Long before I thought of myself as a designer, this project taught me to notice friction, build a solution, price it, and improve the experience every time somebody arrived.

01

The problem / context

What I was solving

Concert parking can involve congestion, limited inventory, uncertain availability, expensive options, longer walks, and slow arrival or exit. Southern Parking turned proximity and unused capacity into a service.

02

My role

How I worked

I handled pricing, customer communication, event operations, demand assessment, car placement, traffic flow, capacity management, marketing, signage, arrival coordination, and exit planning—learning through repetition across many concert nights.

Process flow

How it moves

  1. 01Event announced

The process

Thinking, versions, evidence

  1. 01REAL-WORLD TEST

    The space

A real driveway near the venue. Limited capacity is part of what makes the business interesting—organization and flow matter because inventory is finite.

  2. 02WHAT CHANGED

    Pricing as a decision

Historic range approximately $30–$80 depending on event, demand, availability, and timing—not a fixed menu, but a decision-making problem each night.

  3. 03CONCEPT APPLICATION

    Later identity exploration

More polished SPC visual identity explorations are labeled as later branding evolution. Not every conceptual uniform, key tag, or sign physically existed.

Later branding exploration

If showing polished SPC identity, label clearly as later exploration — not original ops.

  • ORIGIN STORY — notice demand, operate, improve.
  • Capacity constraint — seven cars can teach more than a mockup.
  • Authenticity over luxury valet fiction.

Outcome

Where it landed

What began as parking a few cars became a small event operation serving more than one hundred concerts and generating more than $45,000 in revenue.

06

Reflection

Southern Parking was probably the first time I learned that a business is really a collection of design decisions. Price, traffic flow, signage, where a car sits, and how quickly someone can leave all shape the experience—even when nobody calls them design.
